Wholesome Food Farm is a small farm owned by the Moseley Family, a 3rd generation farming family, raising 100% grass fed beef in beautiful southeastern Berks County, Pennsylvania.
The mission of Wholesome Food Farm is to create a healthy farm environment, which produces a healthy, happy and contented animal. Providing our customers with a superior quality product, in our organically raised grass fed beef cattle.
Black Angus cattle are organically raised and have free range in lush pastures, made up of clover, timothy and orchard grass...never confining to a feed lot. During the Winter months, cattle are fed haylage and dry hay, organically grown at a nearby farm. Cattle are never fed corn or any type of grain, adhering to the grass fed guidelines. Growth hormones and antibiotics are never used.
Like the cattle on our farm, the chickens; sheep; and alpacas are given access to fresh air, sunshine and clean pastures.
Our model of farming consists of constant animal and soil management, which means we are involved in all aspects of the animal's production life-cycle.
Serving Berks County and the Lehigh Valley, in Pennsylvania.
Wholesome Food Farm was selected, along with Eight Oaks Distillery and Heidel Hollow Farm, to be featured in the virtual Penn State Open Gate Tour of 2020. Enjoy!
(Please note that Wholesome Food Farm no longer has an onsite farm store.)
Cattle are much healthier when living and feeding on pasture. Steers on pasture have better feet and legs and less lameness than cattle that live on cement, along with a daily diet of primarily grain. They tend to live longer, and there is less calf-hood mortality. The animals are generally cleaner, because they are not paying in areas where manure becomes concentrated in confinement buildings or feedlots.
Consumers who make grass fed beef a part of their diet, benefit from the animals' diet as well. Grass fed beef is lower in total fat than conventional beef, and is higher in "healthy fats". "Healthy fats" include Omega 3, which are thought to help improve and maintain brain function. They also support heart function and help the human body absorb nutrients. Grass fed beef contains more vitamin B12; vitamin E; and vitamin A than conventional fed beef.
Grass based production is also much better for our environment than conventional. Pastures act as a carbon sink, meaning that they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and concentrate it in plant tissues. This is especially important in an era where we are very concerned about greenhouse gases. Grass prevents erosion, with it's strong root systems, holds the soil in place. The plants absorb and hold the rain water, unlike cement-like surfaces, which encourage rain water run-off. Since the animals fertilize the pastures with their manure, 75% of the plant nutrients remain in place, keeping the soil healthy and keeping us from having to use artificial fertilizers.
Yes it does. However, most people agree that the taste of grass fed meat is superb and much more flavorful than conventional beef. Many describe our beef as more "full bodied" in flavor.
Just like anything else, when you buy food, you get what you pay for. Grass fed production requires land area and a longer period of time, much longer than conventional practices, which result in the quality product you will get with grass fed beef.
